Chemistry

Making the decision to collaborate with a virtual assistant requires the same kind of mindset as with any other relationship, with the first encounter being the ultimate “blind date.”  You wouldn’t enter into a relationship with someone without taking the time to get to know them and determining whether there is chemistry.

Well, the same rules apply in a virtual relationship between client and assistant.  Therefore, it’s smart for us to make sure we are right for each other.  This is a relatively painless process that involves three conversations between us.  By the end of the third conversation, you will know me (and yourself, I’ll bet) a lot better, and we will both know whether we want to work together.

This isn’t necessarily an easy process, but it is a necessary one.  Here’s how it works:

Discussion One (20-30 minutes)

During this initial conversation, we will have an opportunity to hear each other’s voices and exchange information about your administrative needs and my ability to meet those needs.

If we both agree to move forward and schedule a second discussion, I will ask you to spend a few minutes developing a list of specific administrative tasks that you would ideally prefer for your VA to handle. That list will be the basis for our second discussion.

Discussion Two (45-60 minutes)

During this conversation, we will share more information about our respective backgrounds, experiences and interests. We talk more about your business, including your goals and your timeline for achieving those goals. We’ll review your list and explore additional opportunities to free up your time. We also discuss how we will work together virtually, and the tools we will use to do so.

Assuming that we are both interested in continuing to the next step, a third conversation is scheduled.

Discussion Three (60+ minutes)

This third conversation is what is called the “deeper” discussion.  Many collaborations fail because the parties involved didn’t take the time to address these deeper issues.  During this conversation, we will focus on our respective views and perspectives on work style, ethics, confidentiality, cultural differences/compatibility, problem-solving, conflict resolution, trust, respect, collaboration and boundaries.  This list of topics is by no means all-inclusive.

Following this conversation, if we have been completely open and honest with each other, we will know each other about as well as we can without the benefit of spending time working together.

If we are both comfortable, confident and enthusiastic about collaborating, we proceed with entering the Client/VA relationship.
